Looking over the considerable benefits of mobile broadband -- whether on a laptop or cell device -- you generally will only stand to benefit from this advance in technology. However, as quickly as the bandwidth is increasing, there are a number of internet providers getting on board and hoping to lead the pack in the niche. The consumer should be well prepared when making this decision, as choosing a mobile broadband package will be much like choosing a cell phone plan: Multiple years will probably be on the table, and the longer the contract the better the price will be. Look over these five factors before signing up for a plan.

1. Equipment issues. The good news about 4G mobile internet is the lack of much hardware. You’ll be able to get online with a USB plug in your laptop at the most, and at the least your cell or laptop will already have the nuts and bolts of the technology, requiring only a plan from one of the providers. Compare the prices of the equipment itself, looking for reductions if you sign on for a longer contract.

2. Speeds. It might be hard to sort through all of the numbers and estimates, but notice right off the bat that most wireless providers will have their maximum speeds prominently displayed in the literature. Ask about the average speeds along with that, trying to size up the technology as it would compare to your broadband at home, for example. Look around for the results of studies that are being conducted independently of the different providers.

3. Usage issues. You may have to deal with usage limits when it comes to mobile broadband packages, especially on cell phones. As the network continues to expand, these limits will probably be relaxed, but in the beginning companies will be trying to keep the network operating at quality speeds for all users. Try to figure out what amount of data you will need beforehand. Companies should be able to help with your calculation.

4. Length of contract. As there are many things in common with cell phone plans, the length of contract has to be weighed carefully in any decision. While signing on for a longer period of time may open the door to monthly discounts and lower prices on equipment, as you know, once you are in it can be difficult to get out.

5. Fees, hidden and otherwise. For data usage, there are going to be added fees when you pass a set limit which you’ve paid for. Check out the company’s overage charges before you sign up -- that could be a back breaker if you’re caught unawares. Also, the contract termination fee should be considered. Are there any alternatives if service is not living up to its billing?

by Oswald Melmanzenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-85599613714894607682009-10-05T00:25:00.000-07:002009-10-05T00:28:51.687-07:00Desktop Computers Are Still NecessaryIn the past few years laptops have started to make a very serious dent in replacing desktop computers. There are a lot of good reasons, convenience and mobility being the most common. Prices have dropped considerably and power and features have increased steadily. Being able to take it with is a big advantage.

Although I'm not sure I'd call one of those 12 pound, 17 inch screen laptops portable, they are still much easier to carry than lugging around a monitor and rectangular box. But even with all the improvements and price breaks on the new laptop models, sometimes you need power or software that just won't run that well on a laptop.

I have two laptops (one with about a 15 inch screen and a netbook that I really have adopted as my go to travel model). But I do some video work, have a few software programs that I still work on, and a huge media collection that will never fit or work on a laptop. And considering that every new version of my high-end software programs take advantage of the latest hardware features, I'm probably always going to need a desktop computer.

I also like having multiple monitors when editing videos, and having several versions open at one time. That's not going to happen on your normal laptop. I have seen some newer units that are getting close, but the high-end laptops are way to expensive nowhere near as powerful when compared to desktop computer models.

Video card power is important even on smaller applications. Refresh rates, dedicated ram, and our good old friend heat, are all problems for most laptops. Screen resolution and number of colors has come a long way and are more than acceptable on most laptops. But for sheer power, you need a fast refresh rate and lots of dedicated ram to really shine.
And I know that you can connect a USB hard drive to expand the storage capacity but it's not the same as running your hard drive off of a motherboard connection at very high rpms and multiple paths (speeds up access). Plus I have a 32 inch LCD TV that I also use to see what my video will look like on an actual big screen that helps me insure that everything is working as it should.

One of the big issues about reducing the size of the components and putting everything in a small-enclosed area is heat. Most of the newer more powerful laptops will burn your legs if you work too long. The heat created is considerable and even though they have exhaust fans, still builds up.

Not everyone needs that kind of power and a good $800 laptop can certainly handle documents, spreadsheets, surfing the net, and email chores quite nicely. Even the new netbooks can handle most normal computing chores. And the size and cost are as good as it gets. I really like my netbook and use it a lot while out of the office. And the latest versions even have more power and features.

And the chance that any software will get smaller and faster is very doubtful. Software publishers add features to attract new buyers and current users to upgrade. That's the standard even though many will never use the features; it's a marketing necessity to generate sales.

But those of us that need some real grunt computing power won't be replacing our desktop computers any time soon. Software is getting more and more out of hand in making hardware demands and code is bloating at an incredible rate. Even the basic OS has grown so large and slow that it takes some serious power when you add additional software to the mix.

by John Dowzenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-56423733097043061052009-10-04T01:05:00.000-07:002009-10-04T01:09:27.224-07:00How to Auto Run an Application From a USB Flash DriveMore and more people are leaning more on the use of USB flash drive as their handy "filing cabinet". Aside from being the more convenient option to carrying a bulk of important files and documents in a pen like device, it is also very much customisable and flexible to its owner's data storage and security preferences. As it is small and lightweight, it can be fitted almost everywhere, compared to carrying stacks of CDs, carrying a pen-like storage device is the more appealing option to carrying data, media and other forms of digital files
. Even big companies are now promoting the wide use of USB flash drive among their employees. This goes to show that the use flash drives have gone far from being an accessory; it has become a necessity to all computer applications.

USB flash drives are so easy and convenient to use, however, to fully enjoy its features, you will need to manipulate some of its default settings first.

For instance, if you want to immediately open or access the contents of this external hard drive, you may set an Auto run feature. This way, all your files will immediately be available the instant that you insert your USB flash disk into the USB drive. The Auto run technology is readily available for Windows software, enabling the user to start a particular program or open a particular document instantly.

But does this technology accommodate USB flash disk applications? Absolutely yes!

Whenever you insert your USB memory stick in a computer, you will notice that a dialog box appears immediately after the computer establishes connection with the external hard drive. This is the same dialog box that you see when you insert a CD or DVD in the CD slot of your computer. To prevent interrupting your tasks in having to deal with this dialog box whenever you insert the memory stick, you can turn on the Auto run mode of your USB. But if you want to have those features applied only on selected documents, it can actually be done. There is a new command that designated Auto run program turning an ordinary file into an Autorun.inf file. The command used is "ACTION", which is displayed in the AutoPlay dialog box. There will be a text row that indicated open command for all Autorun.inf files. All the user needs to do is press the Enter Key or "ok" option to launch the program specified by the "OPEN" command.

Many people will find this application useful for it saves them time to do their task. For those who are doing rush work, they can immediately have their files organised or saved by eliminating the constant nuisance of dealing with the dialog box options whenever the USB memory stick is inserted. Since the Auto Run technology works much like a shortcut to accessing and opening specific documents or media files from one central location. In this manner, there will be no need for minutes of searching for your needed files. The tricky part of this USB memory stick feature is the manner on which anybody actuates automatic file opening operations whenever the USB memory stick is inserted. What's presented here is just one of the methods of automatically running the Auto Run technology incorporated in USB memory sticks. This procedure may or may not be effective, but thankfully, a number of forums are now welcoming USB applications inquiry, enlightening USB users of their troubleshooting concerns.

by Derek Rogerszenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-22226685861961000332009-10-02T02:45:00.000-07:002009-10-02T02:49:18.687-07:00Top 10 Super Photoshop Tips and TricksAdobe continually improves, upgrades and changes Photoshop and I'm no guru but I'm able to do a fair amount with Photoshop myself. My wife is what I would term a Photoshop guru or expert and the things she can get Photoshop to do continues to blow me away. My wife uses the newest version of Photoshop at her job as a Digital Designer, but I'm still on Photoshop 7, so please bare with me if my tips are old or outdated.

I have tried here to compile 10 tips that will help you use Photoshop in ways you never thought of before or maybe just to use it more quickly to do the things you do now.

1- Edge Burn-in Technique

Try using the Rectangular Marquee tool (M) and select the area slightly smaller than the outer edge of the image (50-100 pixels, your preference). Now invert the selection (Select-Inverse) and make a Curves adjustment later to darken the edge and click OK. Then apply a heavy Gaussian Blur (Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blur) to the layer mask with a Radius of around 100 pixels based on your preference. You can customize this by using the Brush tools or layer Opacity slider.

2- Make Image Midtones Pop

To avoid sharp shadows or highlights while bringing out the midtones try this technique. Make a duplicate of the Background layer and then choose Filter-Sharpen-Unsharp Mask, and then set the Amount, Radius and Threshold to 50/20/20 respectively. Now from the Layers palette menu select Blending Options and in the This Layer section move the Shadow slider to 70 and Highlight to 185. Now press Alt (Option) and separate the triangular sliders to drag the shadow point to 0 and the highlight to 255 and click OK.

3- Make Fancy Edges for Images With Filters

Open a copy of your image so you keep your original intact and double click on the Background layer in the Layers palette. Now click OK to make that layer a Layer 0, or normal layer. Use the Rectangular Marquee tool (M) and create a selection slightly smaller than the outer edge of the image same as in the edge burn-in technique above. Enter Quick Mask mode (Q) and click Filter-Filter Gallery and apply any filters you prefer and click OK. Exit Quick Mask mode (Q again) and then click the Add Layer Mask icon in the Layers palette to mask the image in the shape you created.

4- Quick Layer Tip

When you add a new layer it appears at the top of the Layers palette. To make your new layer below the active layer and not the background layer press Ctrl (Command) when you click the Create a New Layer icon!

5- Make Cropped Images Match

With both images already opened, start by clicking on the image that is the correct size. Now select the Crop tool (C) and click on the Front Image button in the Options bar and the Width, Height and Resolution properties in the Options Bar are filled in for the front image. Now drag out a crop boundary in the second image and press Enter (Return) and your second image is now the exact same size as the first.

6- Take Control of Sliders

When you move your cursor over a numeric option in most Option or dialog boxes a slider bar appears. If you want more control over the slider, pressing Alt (Option) and dragging the cursor makes the values move 10 times more slowly and holding the Shift key makes them move 10 times faster!

7- Is Your Histogram Accurate?

Be certain that your Histogram is not a cached version of your previous edits. If you see a small triangle on the Histogram click it and it will update to the current version.

8- Reapply the Last Filter

If you want to use the same filter again with the same settings hold down Alt (Option) as you select the filter and it will open with the last-used settings. You can also use the shortcut Shift-Alt-F (Shift-Option-F) to reapply the filter.

9- Easy Crop Tool

When Cropping (C) click and drag outside the bounding box and this will allow the crop box to rotate any way you like to change the angle of your image or get it nice and straight. Double click inside the box to crop.

10- Make Crisp-Edged Shapes

When using the rectangular Shape tool, click on the down arrow to the right of the shapes in the Options Bar and turn on Snap to Pixels checkbox!

I hope you are able to find one or two items that will help with your Photoshop use and I will have more tips soon!

by Thomas Draytonzenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-21055209754847648422009-10-01T00:19:00.000-07:002009-10-01T00:35:05.961-07:00How to Fix the Windows Explorer ErrorDo you have the Windows Explorer error when you do? As the accessories are changing keeping pace with the taste and requirements of the people, it has become necessary for the manufacturers to change the face of laptop backpacks keeping pace with such changes.

The world around us is changing almost every day. Just open up the morning newspaper or your computer or view the science news on the TV and you will find some new inventions finding place with almost alarming regularity. In addition the requirements and tastes of the people are also changing. Therefore every industry requires keeping pace with such changes so that they do not fall behind the requirements of their customers. Changes are even more prominent in the computer world where every day some new accessories are finding place in the market. Moreover the shape and sizes of laptops are also changing frequently. To keep pace with all such changes it is necessary for the manufacturers to change the face of the laptop backpacks they are manufacturing.

One of the basic features of such changes is that the manufacturers provide several additional pockets and compartments so that it becomes possible to house extra accessories those have become the features today. At the same time it is also necessary that they change the shape and pattern of the backpacks to fit perfectly with the current day laptops. One of the reasons why such changes have become necessary is that there has been a sea change in the shape and size of laptop computers. In the past such computers used to be fattier and larger in size. However these days the trend in the market is for smaller and thinner laptops. To top them all there are the notebook laptops and they require much smaller space for their accommodation. On the other hand the number of accessories has increased considerably in comparison with the earlier days with the advent of new technologies like the MP3 and mobile telephony.

Laptops are expensive items and therefore the owners are mostly concerned with their well being. Chances of damages during travel and tours are the maximum for the laptops. Therefore the laptop backpacks are usually in great demands today. Yet like all other industries the backpack industry is also having stiff competition among the manufacturers for grabbing the leading position in the market.

Therefore they are coming out with newer varieties and types of these backpacks. Thus you will find in the market backpacks having water resistant covers, or backpacks with such padding that they can withstand sudden jolts and impacts that could otherwise damage your laptop.

Bottom line of all these is that any backpack would be good and useful only when it fits in perfectly with the size of the laptop and its accessories and that is convenient carrying. Ill-fitting backpacks can cause injuries to your back in the long run and it could be extremely uncomfortable even in the short term. That is why backpacks with wide as well as the padded straps could be best for your shoulder. More than anyone else it is the manufacturers who should understand it and change their views about manufacturing process of backpacks for laptops.

by Robart Alexzenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-48382393827756782852009-09-28T20:25:00.000-07:002009-09-28T20:31:19.030-07:00The 5 Best Computer Buys of 2009I recently decided to buy my father a new computer (his was a dinosaur). Like most people in the market for a new computer, I wanted one that didn't cost a small fortune, but was still good. What I found was quite a bit of stress and a LOT of hype. Everyone claims to be the best for your money, so how do you know if it's true or not without being a computer genius? So I decided to write this article with the hopes of saving you some time and tears when searching for the perfect computer. It is a simple list of my pick for the top 5 best computer buys of 2009.

Please note that I am not a computer guru and this was not written for computer gurus. It is a quick overview for the average Joe. There are some spec for each computer, and a link in my bio to find out more information about each model if you desire.

5. HP Pavilion s3500f Desktop

HP has always been a trusted favorite of mine. The Pavilion is a well-established product, and for good reason. This particular model comes with:
-AMD Sempron
-4GB DDR2 SDRAM memory
-a 500GB hard drive
-Windows Vista Home Basic 32 bit
-and a whole lot more.
A great computer for home use and is an excellent deal.

4. Acer Aspire M3201

Acer is a brand I personally have not owned before. However, the brand gets great reviews and the prices are unbeatable. I've been hearing nothing but good things about it from friends and family members that own Acer computers, as well as the professionals. This particular model has:
-AMD Athlon processor
-3GB DDR2 SDRAM
-320GB Hard Drive
-and Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit

3. Gateway DX4200-11

I think that the greatest thing about this computer is simply that it is backed by Gateway. They've always been very good with technical support and customer service for their products. I've always had very happy dealings with Gateway. The computer is a bit higher in price, but comes with:
-AMD® X-4 Quad-Core Processor
-6GB DDR2
-a 750GB hard drive (750 GB makes my head spin!)
-and Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

2. Acer Aspire X3200 Desktop

Yes, another Acer. You can tell that I fell in love with this brand pretty quickly. This model is actually the one I finally decided to buy for my father. It comes with:
-AMD Athalon processor
-4GB DDR2 SDRAM
-500GB hard drive
-and Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit

The price is slightly higher than the other Acer listed, but the upgrade was well worth it for me. My father went from having a dinosaur to having a computer twice as good as mine!

1. Apple iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 24" Desktop

This is actually the computer I've been eyeing for myself recently (Don't tell my dad). A few months ago a friend of mine got one and every time I go to her place I ask to use it! It's quite a joy. I just fight with myself over the price tag and whether or not I truly want to switch to Mac. This is at the top of my list because it's the best. If you are in the market to pay this much for a new computer, this should be the one!
-Intel Core Duo processor
-3GB DDR2, 320GB hard drive
-Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard
-24' flat LCD screen monitor

This is my personal pick for the top 5 best computer buys based on the research I went through. Hope it saves some of you time and money!

Chrissy Dean has been published all over the web for years on topics such as relationships, healthy eating, exercise, and saving money, all with the goal of helping everyone live happier, healthier lives.

by Meg Johnsonzenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-70884568971023027822009-09-26T07:55:00.000-07:002009-09-26T08:11:50.229-07:00Comparing Different Kinds of Laptop Based on Features and FunctionsChoosing what laptop computer to buy is somehow a tough ordeal. In order to arrive at a decision, you must know your options. One way to be able to do that is to compare them according to their use. Knowing the different sorts of laptop computer and comparing their features, price, and functions will help you make up your mind which one you must get. It is important to make the right choice since some of the laptops around have same price but with different features. Doing so will let you determine where you should spend your money when buying your first or maybe next laptop unit. Here is a general comparison of different types of laptop computer based on their functions.

Ultraportable Laptops

Most of the ultraportable laptops available have 12-inch screens or lesser, but are bigger than netbooks. Netbooks are small and portable but they are considered as all-purpose laptops because they have the capacities of word processing, limited gaming and web browsing but their performance is slower particularly when it involves multitasking.

Ultraportables are getting more improved that they can compete with some of the older all-purpose laptop models as mobile technology gets on the rise. However their small and sleek screen sizes may impede productivity. It's only best to choose to buy them if you're fond of travelling and you want to take a digital companion.

Power Laptops

Power laptops, similar to those manufactured by well-known laptop computer brands, remain to be the most powerful laptop computers among the other types mentioned. This is due to the fact that bigger size units allow more components or features to be installed. But there are things that you may need to take a look at before buying one. A 17-inch laptop computer for instance, is a bit bigger and heavier to carry around compared to the all-purpose and ultraportable laptops. Check on the specifications of the product before buying.

When buying a refurbished notebook and antivirus software, it is important to consider all the possible factors that can affect its quality. Of course, you do not want to buy something you will regret later on. Here are some useful tips in buying a refurbished notebook and antivirus software:

Buying a Refurbished Notebook

In order to save money, most people purchase refurbished notebooks instead of a new one. With inflation and the recession these days, it is more practical. Imagine saving more than $100 by doing this. When it comes to the quality, of course, there are things you need to consider before you finally say "yes" to a refurbished notebook.

Refurbished notebooks are computer machines that were returned to the company because of various possible reasons. There are also those that did not even leave the factory due to testing defects. Other reasons can be as simple as a buyer changing his mind or he realized its too pricy as well as other reasons not particularly due to the computer itself.

Retailers often take these returned machines, have the hard drive wiped, have the software reinstalled and have it placed back on the shelf on sale. These are also called "open box computers" which should never be confused with "factory refurbished notebooks." Hence, these "open box computers" can also have the full warranty of the manufacturer but this is totally dependent on the retailer. This is why it is best to check the warranty before you make the purchase.

If a notebook was returned due to working issues, transit damages and the like, most of the time, retailers replace the notebook's defective parts with standard factory parts. After this, it will go through a series of check-ups in order to make sure that it is already working properly. Then it will be placed on a sale price. This is now called "factory refurbished notebooks."

Occasionally, brick and mortar retailers sell these factory refurbished notebooks, however they are now more commonly sold online. You can also see them within the site of the main manufacturer. In fact, Dell, HP, Apple and various other manufacturers have refurbished notebook deals on their websites. When it comes to big box retailers, they don't stock refurbished notebooks in their store inventories but they are placed on their online stores.

With the low price, it is definitely an attractive deal but you need to consider the various potential consequences that can arise with the purchase of refurbished machines. So, prior to purchasing an open box or refurbished notebook computer, you need to ask for the remaining warranty and if it can be extended; ask if every component that came with it when it was new is still there; and ask if you can still return it if you will encounter problems with it.

Aside from all of this, before you buy a refurbished notebook, make sure that you are satisfied with it. Even if saving more than a $100 is a great deal, if it compromised the quality as well as your confidence in the machine, it is not worth it and you should just buy a new one.

Buying Antivirus Software

With all the different brands of antivirus software in the market, it is really hard to choose which can be the best for your computer. Although it is best to go with a reputable brand, there are antivirus software already comes with the computer. The best thing to do is to take note of the version and brand of antivirus software that comes with the computer; if this is preinstalled, if you will be the one installing it or if they will be the one to install it; if this antivirus software is fully functional or it is limited by a demo package; and if you will be entitled to virus defined updates. Once you have checked on this and you are satisfied with the answers then it is a sure deal.

by David H. Whether it is your computer at home or the one you use at work, slow computer performance makes for a long day, and requires eons of patience; both of which many people don't have. The good news is that you do not have to deal with a slow computer if you have the right tools to fix it.

Why Is My Computer So Slow?

There are a million and one things that could be behind your computer's slow performance. OK, maybe not that many things. But, it can seem that way when you're trying to figure out were the problem is. And, more times than not it's going to show up in your computers registry.

The Importance Of Safety When Working With A Registry

You should proceed cautiously when you start making changes to your registry in an attempt to speed up your computers performance. Before you do anything, make sure you create backup files just in case you mess something up that wasn't messed up before you started. The other piece of safety advice is don't mess around in your computers registry unless you know what you're doing.

Speed Up Your PC
Easily Scan, Repair and Fix Errors
Speed & Optimize PC, Free Download

The files and entries that are stored in there are critical to your computer's ability to function properly. Even if you are confident that you can clean up the registry without further damaging it, you should still create backup files; even Thomas Edison didn't get it right all the time.

The registry is a collection of crucial files and entries that allow your computer to function properly. Any mistakes that are made in it could threaten your computer's ability to function at all. A safer way to clean your computers registry is by using a registry cleaner.

What's A Registry Cleaner and How Can It Speed Up Computer Performance?

I'm glad you asked. Some sell their used computer instead of throwing them as a trash get some money from them, while others sell their used computers to buy new computers with the latest features and technology. Not only individuals sell their used computers, but also large numbers of organizations or firms sell their used computers. They do so because the computer systems may require maintenance and repairs, after some time due to the decrease in performance seen in the computers after some years. Instead of spending more money on the maintenance and repairs they sell and gain money, as there is a great demand for used computers. Such companies easily sell their used computers online through auctions or exchange for new computers with less effort in no time.

Used computers are bought by either students who do not have good savings or earnings or they are bought by educational institutions like the schools and universities. Some parents buy used computers for their children just for browsing the Internet and to play games. For this purpose, a used computer is more than sufficient than spending huge amounts on a new computer. These target segments however require used computers in a good working condition as well as for a lesser price. Most of the used computers are sold in the online market, as it attracts all sorts of buyers. There are many numbers of online classifieds or auctions or online dealers who sell used computers. Selling used computers are a better option than throwing them as trash or keeping them in a corner occupying space and collecting dust.

The first and important step is to improve the appearance of the used computer by wiping it clean free of dust and dirt. Any buyer would get impressed by the way the computer looks, looks make the first impression. The selling price of a clean used computer is always better than the one, which is full of dirt and dust.

All the software manual, operating system and other supporting discs that came with the computer should be in tact. This will add more value, when selling the used computer and also will make the buyer consider the person who is selling the used computer as a trusted seller.

The most important thing to do before selling a used computer is to erase all the personal details or information from the hard disk or drive. Instead of just putting them in the trash folder it is very important to purge all the personal data from the computer’s memory, even invisible backup files can cause danger. A tech savvy person’s help can be got if the seller does not know how to do it. If not done it may lead to accessing the bank accounts, or emails by any unknown person leading to identity theft. For that when there is a remedy. Unused scanners, printers can also be bundled with the sale of the used computer. A buyer may sometime value it. The benefits or features of the computer can be highlighted for better sales.zenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-28683000409810113592009-09-17T23:27:00.000-07:002009-09-17T23:36:35.474-07:00Tips On How To Use A Pen DriveThe days are long gone when floppy discs were the only way to store and carry data from one computer to another. Then along came CD-Rom and DVDs for transporting data but these were also cumbersome. People wanted something more compact and tiny which could be just slipped into their pockets and yet be capable of storing large amounts of data. The pen drive has emerged as the solution to this quest and accessing and transporting data has never been so easier.

Weighing a mere 21 grams, the pen drive looks like a small pen but boasts of massive data storage capacity which could range from 32 MB to 16 GB or more, which amounts to thousands times more than a 1.44 MB floppy disc. Its storage capacity is even more than that of the later CDs and DVDs.

Also referred to as a USB flash drive, the pen drive is dust-proof, shock-proof and does not require any batteries. It is compatible to both PCs and laptops and functions without the help of any cables or software just requiring a USB port on the computer. It simply has to be plugged into the port of the computer which detects it automatically. It can not only be read but written as well.

Data from the pen drive is transferred only a bit at a time so as to lessen the complexity of the mounted circuit within the pen drive and also to reduce the power consumed by the pen drive. The pen drive has an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) memory which is a flash memory.

The ease with which a pen drive can be used continues to astonish as it is a mere plug and play device and works independently of any software, enabling data, video or audio to be easily written and read. The USB port is faster in data transfer than the serial port as the operating system can detect the USB pen drive very swiftly and create a new drive in the computer automatically. This newly created drive can be seen on the computer.

To access the pen drive, all you have to do is to click on the `My Computer` section where an icon has been created and all sorts of data, music and videos can now be transferred either to or from the computer. After the transfer is over, the pen drive should be disconnected from the computer.

Pen drives have become so handy that one cannot imagine any other type of computer data transfer now. Personal data like pictures, files or videos can be stored and transferred with the help of a pen drive and even retrieving lost data or repairing the computer becomes less difficult with this tool.

Pen drives are used very commonly for data back-ups and anti-virus software or transfer recovery software. It is also capable of storing the host machine`s data in emergencies. It works as an application carrier which runs on the host computer without the hassle of being installed on the hard disc. So many varieties of software can be used to run the pen drive that it can turn its host computer and other nearby computers into a web-like environment.

Pen drives are being constantly updated and now come with many additional features like the MP3 playback, built-in camera and even the fingerprint biometric feature. Pen drives are also being used in the manufacture of digital audio players for sound output. Some even feature LCD display for audio input jack and for track browsing.

Advancing technology will only enhance the capacity of the pen drives and they will come equipped with newer features.

by Roberto Sedycias

zenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-83062142983031550302009-08-30T20:12:00.000-07:002009-08-30T20:19:44.249-07:00Microsoft Zune HD: Can it defeat Apple IPod touch ?? The Zune HD is much slimmer than the current Zune 120 because it will use flash memory rather than a hard drive. This means the expected storage capacity will be 16 GB with a possible more expense model at 32 GB or discount option at 8 GB. The price range will depend on storage capacity, however there is some expectation that the Zune HD Price will be $250 for the base model.

The outer casing is a matte finished aluminum to prevent fingerprints, it can come in black or silver with a hint of gold. Each Zune HD supports a full WiFi web browser which is a new feature for the Zune brand. Zune HD reviews will have to note the specific features that Zune apart from the iPod touch such as the HD radio reception and HD video output at 720p resolution.

Question:
With these features, will Microsoft Zune HD have a product comparable to the Apple iPod Touch ? are these cool features and comparable operation enough for Microsoft to take a bite of Apple and gain market share??

Analysis:
Quite frankly, NO...

While the Zune appears to function as well as or better then an iPod touch, there are items beyond the product itself that make iPods so popular. Looking at the history of the iPod, it is iTunes that has provided most of the growth for the product. Being a part of the CE industry during the rise of the iPod, I have used players that have sounded better, functioned better and provided more pleasure then iPods themselves. However, it you look at the ease of use of the iPod with iTunes as the means to load content, it has a benefit to any other player.

One down side to the Zune HD is that it will not play games or run apps (at least in the first release), this is something that is making the iPod touch and iPhone so popular. Consumers are not really buying it cause it sounds or looks good, the fact that you use it for everything is one of the most appealing factors.

Over the years Apple iTunes and iPod have become the known name for portable players and downloading music. These Apple brands are used like Band Aid and Kleenex to refer to downloading and playback. Because of the popularity, there is an entire industry based on the iPod. Everything that you could ever want from a new blingy cover to a dock so that you can listen on a big system are available, there are even TVs with docs so that video can be watched at home. AV product manufacturers have spent years developing products to support iPod and it will be a long time before they start developing for the Zune. Additionally, consumers have spent years building libraries in iTunes, and I bet that the Zune will not sync or play that content...

Microsoft has a counter measure for iTunes with ZunePass, this is a monthly fee service that allows for downloading of content to the Zune. While this is something that is needed, Microsoft would have been better to stay out of that game and partner with an established service such as Rhapsody. At this point in the game Rhapsody continues to grow as the alternative to iTunes, and while I am sure that purchased music from Rhapsody can be used on the Zune, having the subscription content would be better.

The bottom line is that while the Zune may have some advantages in performance, it lacks the support that the iPod has. The lower cost for the Zune HD may steer new users in Microsoft direction, it will not bring old iPod users over. However, only time will tell, as stranger things in Consumer Electronics have happened.

by Rushrush
zenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-45947361713635922562009-08-22T20:54:00.000-07:002009-08-22T21:02:04.554-07:00Mobile Social Networking and Used Cell Phones Mobile social networking is a trend that is growing at an incredible rate; it could soon overtake the need to access a computer for all social networking activities. Social networking companies, like Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace, have partnered together with mobile phone carriers and mobile phone manufacturers to ensure that their communities not only featured prominently within the web start pages but that their mobile applications function correctly on all internet-ready mobile phones. This is allowing people to be in constant contact with their online social communities.

The growing popularity of social networking is reaching mobile phone users from all walks of life; students are taking advantage of mobile social networking to help them stay in touch with their peers, family, and even with their schoolwork. Many schools (universities especially) have permitted their teachers and other activity groups within the schools to form private groups on social networking sites. These groups allow students to connect with one another when not in the classroom, get help with their homework, and keep up with assignments. The groups are accessible via the mobile networking applications; so long as the mobile phone being utilized is capable of loading the full application onto it. Parents of teenagers may not be willing to spend a small fortune upgrading their mobile phones so that they can have better access to a social networking website; however, a used cell phone that is adequate for accessing the social networking sites can be purchased more affordably from a reputable third party cell phone seller.

In addition to the student population using mobile social networking, there is a rather large contingent of stay at home moms using the available social networking sites to keep in touch with other stay at home moms, friends, family, and even with support groups that have set up presences on social networking websites. For a busy mom that has little to no time to sit down at a computer, the ability to quickly post a message, respond to a message, or check out an invitation in the palm of their hand is an invaluable tool!

The social networking companies mentioned above do have fierce competition in companies that provide only mobile social networking; they have little to no web presence. With lower overhead and limited marketing budget, these companies rely on consumer word of mouth to ensure their communities grow.

As the technology grows and the available software improves, the communications on social networking sites will no longer be limited in nature; consumers will be able to perform all functions on a mobile phone that they would using a computer. In fact, with each passing day, mobile phones are becoming more and more like mobile computers - with functionality beyond web-interfacing like work processors, picture editors, and so on. Mobile phones that are technologically advanced will become more and more affordable for all consumers; however, for those who have a limited budget to spend and do not mind being one generation behind, a good refurbished used cell phone will be a great option.

by Jerry Atkins
zenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-55052439796713045202009-08-20T02:33:00.000-07:002009-08-20T02:46:15.601-07:007 Tips on How to Select The Perfect LaptopTip 1: Know The Purpose Of Your Laptop. In other words, why are you buying a laptop? This is extremely important to know and admit to yourself because different purposes favor different aspects in a laptop. Are you a gamer? Then your going to want a great graphics card and a good amount of RAM (Random Access Memory). Are you a casual at-home user? Then you will want a great battery-life along with some Processor Speed (Ghz). It's very important to know what you need for your dream laptop.

Tip 2: Choose a Computer Look That fits your style. The best laptop for you is the one that is going to make you squirm by just looking at it. You should pick a color that you either love or a color that fits your personality. Professionals who use there computer for work and profit usually prefer white or gray. Experts who are serious and enjoy showing off their knowledge tend to go for black. More Unique users branch out and purchase red, green, or blue laptops. Also, are you after a laptop that is paper thin? Do you prefer a big screen? These are things you need to know before hand so you will know the perfect laptop the instant you see it. Check out my webpage (in the resource box) for way more information on this topic.

Tip 3: Know your price range. You can find the right computer for you much faster if you use advanced searches and enter in a price range. This will keep results off the page that you instantly disregard because they are either way out of your budget, or look way to cheap without good specs. How do you know your price range? Just ask yourself, "If I saw my dream laptop, with every attribute I wanted and more, would I pay $700 for it. What about $750. $800?" You get the point. Also, tell yourself your not going to jump on any deals that are WAY to good to be true. Obviously, your not going to get your dream laptop for $150. So don't aim for it. A really good way to get an awesome laptop for a much cheaper price is to build it yourself!

Tip 4: Aim For Decent Internal System Aspects. Like I said before, different purposes for a computer lead to different main aspects. But, overall you don't want anything to be horrible even if the rest is great. For example, you are getting 3 GB of RAM, a whopping 200 GB of Hard Disk Space, and for a great price, sounds great! But wait, the processor speed is only .5 Ghz, slow as a snail. Unfortunately, one major drawback like this can prevent us from being pleased with the laptop. Click Here for a great free table that shows you my personal opinions for good aspects.

Tip 5: Microsoft Windows or Apple MAC? This is a VERY big decision that you have to make. It all depends on your style and how you want your files organized. Windows gives you more of a decision on what security settings to use and where your files are placed. MAC can be very handy though because it organizes your files and folders for you. Which is for who? It depends on how much you know. If you know a lot about computers you will probably prefer Windows, where you can customize it to your style. If you don't know much and don't have a clue what your doing, then MAC is for you because its very hands off and keeps you from accessing your dangerous or program files. One more pro for MAC, Apple creates its own products for its products. What do I mean? Anything, and I mean anything, that is created by Apple for computers will work on your computer. Check out my website for way more free information on operating systems.

Tip 6: Get a Laptop that has that perfect "feel" to it. What am I talking about? Certain laptops may have something to them that will utterly annoy you forever. Examples:A screechy keyboard, USB ports in the back of the computer, an unresponsive mouse pad, etc. Look online to find information about other users of the laptop who had "annoyances," or, better yet, ask if you can try using the laptop for a test run before actually purchasing it. The goal is to find a laptop where everything is right where you want it, and the feel to everything is great!

Tip 7: Make sure you are getting everything you think you are getting. Buying a laptop off Ebay, Craigslist, or any other place that sells used or refurbished laptops? Then MAKE SURE to check contents of the package before purchasing. Some people will scam you and send you a laptop that has no power cord! Even some stores these days sell new laptops that have no wireless card (used for connecting to the internet wirelessly)! It is better safe than sorry, don't get cheated out of your money!

by Kylezenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-18928418520966127522008-03-19T21:53:00.000-07:002008-03-19T22:00:02.739-07:006 Tips On Choosing Online File Storage Systems<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 0px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0McDHD45G5asy9N6qLMgmRGxrlqPo6u_IGGtc-g5FIvlW6jLRpRguZT7HucEOziyfj0CZ5r2troZriIxwZy6oBgHJkdWCZvPKwzVRNvail-rb5OFmdTBzz8MLMZrOYrTLL8sUDp4uTCk/s320/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5179683575753038370" />
Storage systems have been in use from ancient times. People have used boxes, trunks, filing cabinets, safety deposit boxes, computer serves, floppy disks, external drives and so on to store important personal and business data.

Safe storage now has new avatar online storage facilities that will securely store important information and protect the data from natural, physical, or mechanical disasters. Since the information in online storage systems is stored away from the home or business premises the security is multifold.

Online storage systems are both practical and cost effective ways of storing data. The files are stored after SSL encryption and this ensure protection of privacy. Files stored online can only be retrieved using a password and log in. Reputed storage is offered by Acpana, NovaStar Online Backup Service, connected Data Protector and Data Deposit Box.

When selecting an online storage system consider:

1. How much space you need and the frequency with which you will be accessing the stored information.

2. Find out what system the online storage facility uses. Check reliability of the system.

3. Find out whether they charge a fixed amount for storage or charge depending on the amount of space you actually use. Fixed costs are ideal for large storage but if your storage needs are 500MB or less then a pay per storage plan is more feasible.

4. Always comparison shop for an online storage solution. Compare prices as well as features.

5. Read through the terms and conditions carefully and always conduct a reliability check.

6. In case the online storage offers free storage for a limited period take up the offer as this will help you understand the system as well as its pros and cons.

All computer systems big or small should have a data protection plan in action. Ensure regular local back ups and a second back up in the form of an online storage facility. Log on to the World Wide Web and read unbiased reviews as well as expert tips on online storage facilities and its pros and cons. Always be an informed user of any system.

According to IT experts online storage solutions are superior to traditional back ups. The main advantage of an online back up system is that files can be accessed from anywhere. However to be effective the online back up system has to be understood and implemented properly. Whether or not online back up is cost effective for every individual depends on the amount of space needed. An important concern is of course security of the data files and whether the encryption process if efficient.

Before selecting an online storage system ask about: encryption methods and frequency; security measures and guarantees; whether only files that have been changed will be stored in back up or all files; how will data transfer take place and its regularity.

Choose an online storage facility that is most suited to your needs and cost effective.

by Timothy Rudon
zenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-1151591945645298492007-12-10T17:19:00.000-08:002007-12-10T17:27:13.344-08:00What Is Internet Fax?<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 0px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2-ue-ImALeBVQUPVMg5I0_aiJrwO8TARvx9l5a_e_anMMwAWIXNyuo_topdj09603QbjQPGjOKyLF4DNEubM8VpmPqYhOF9UHmCzLdWbywzFmJnEmvjsXyR4hWqG6evt_lYuLYp5MZMs/s320/key.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142520772975759522" />
Internet Fax is simply using the Internet or your email system to send and receive faxes. Since it is web based, you can send your faxes anytime anywhere; as long as you have an Internet connection and these days that's available just about everywhere.

You sign up with an Internet fax service provider to get your own fax number (local or toll free) which you use in the same manner as you would use any fax number. There is a small charge for this service but keep in mind you do not need an extra phone line to do Internet faxing since everything is done online.

Many small and large business owners are switching over to Internet Fax for some obvious advantages: it is very convenient, it is very fast, it offers more privacy, many faxes can be sent/received simultaneously (no busy signals) and it is available wherever you have the Internet. Plus there are no messy fax machines and no need for a second phone line.

One of the most asked questions about Internet Fax relates to the confusion over just how the whole thing works. Many traditional fax users can't quite get their heads around the idea of having faxes without the traditional fax machine.

Basically, you sign up with a fax service provider and get your own fax number and you send/receive your faxes thru your email system - your fax is attached to an email as either a TIFF or PDF format file. You can access your faxes from an online interface (your fax login site) where your faxes are received and sent. You can also store your faxes online there.

What confuses most people who are not familiar with online faxing is the question: can I still send my faxes to the old traditional machines, since many of my business partners may not be using Internet Fax?

The answer is YES!

You can send your faxes to the old traditional fax machine and if they have your fax number, they can still return a fax to you via the old traditional manner or fax machine.

Here's how Internet Fax works:

You use a fax gateway or Internet Fax provider/server to handle your faxes. For example, say if you were sending a fax.

Computer/Internet -> Fax provider/server -> Phone line -> Fax machine

You use your computer and the Internet to log into your online account/page to send your fax to your fax provider/server which then uses the phone line to send your fax to the receiving fax machine.

If you are receiving a Fax

Fax machine -> Phone line -> Fax provider/server -> Email message (thru Internet) -> Your Email account

Someone uses a fax machine to send you a fax which goes thru the phone line to your fax provider/server which converts it into a TIFF or PDF file and sends you an email message with your fax attached in your email.

If both parties are using Internet Fax, then your faxes can be sent/received using your email systems over the Internet.

Computer/email -> Fax provider/server -> Computer/email

What you really have to keep in mind, once you sign up for an Internet fax service you will have an online interface (login site) where you can send and receive your faxes. Then when you send or receive a fax, you get a confirmation in your web interface and/or by email.

This offers some great advantages such as receiving and sending your faxes whenever and wherever you access the Internet. No more busy signals, no more messy fax machines, no more nosy workers seeing the contents of your fax, and no extra phone line. Plus, many faxes can be sent/received simultaneously, even when your computer is turned off. No more missed faxes because your phone line was busy.

However, in order to get all these advantages you have to sign up for an Internet fax service. There are many well known Internet fax providers such as MyFax, eFax, RapidFax, TrustFax, Send2Fax... and some very good lesser known faxing companies such as MetroHiSpeed out of Seattle and Faxage out of Denver.

A word of caution, when signing up for any long term business service it pays to do your homework first. It pays to shop around mainly because even any small savings may prove significant over the long haul. Prices can range from very cheat (under $20 a year) to around $10 - $15 a month depending on the kind of service you need. There are many different plans and services, and keep in mind, you will pay more for International faxing.

Internet Fax seems to be the way of the future as more and more businesses go online. Besides, as we become more and more modernized, computers are offering us simple and convenient solutions to many of our daily traditional business tasks such as faxing. Can your business or any company really afford to be left behind or not take advantage of the benefits of Internet Fax? Can you still remain competitive without Internet Fax? It's your call?
by: Titus Hoskins
zenkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14593499077433879737noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5206219603590465318.post-51493343564859002202007-12-10T02:30:00.000-08:002007-12-10T02:34:47.092-08:0010 Simple Ways To Speed Up Your Windows XP<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 0px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_XGhzLd4-uRSZiFcDndj-XoBRteX1yGzav8V5roQllhcAMQ1dW9KIxB9aSthg22XICAPfpMQB7rhv0wRqkIrTzmUlTENHQU9Zgr0V6kfwKtU45tsvXPNHlwGZyJcH3b30N-Ux12yITYo/s320/xp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142290790361960594" />
1. Defrag Disk to Speed Up Access to Data

One of the factors that slow the performance of the computer is disk fragmentation. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. To speed up the response time, you should monthly run Disk Defragmenter, a Windows utility that defrags and consolidates fragmented files for quicker computer response.

* Follow Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
* Click the drives you want to defrag and click Analyze
* Click Defragment

2. Detect and Repair Disk Errors

Over time, your hard disk develops bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing difficult or even impossible. To detect and repair disk errors, Windows has a built-in tool called the Error Checking utility. It’ll search the hard disk for bad sectors and system errors and repair them for faster performance.

* Follow Start > My Computer
* In My Computer right-click the hard disk you want to scan and click Properties
* Click the Tools tab
* Click Check Now
* Select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box
* Click Start

3. Disable Indexing Services

Indexing Services is a little application that uses a lot of CPU. By indexing and updating lists of all the files on the computer, it helps you to do a search for something faster as it scans the index list. But if you know where your files are, you can disable this system service. It won’t do any harm to you machine, whether you search often or not very often.

* Go to Start
* Click Settings
* Click Control Panel
* Double-click Add/Remove Programs
* Click the Add/Remove Window Components
* Uncheck the Indexing services
* Click Next
4. Optimize Display Settings

Windows XP is a looker. But it costs you system resources that are used to display all the visual items and effects. Windows looks fine if you disable most of the settings and leave the following:

* Show shadows under menus
* Show shadows under mouse pointer
* Show translucent selection rectangle
* Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
* Use visual styles on windows and buttons

5. Speedup Folder Browsing

You may have noticed that everytime you open My Computer to browse folders that there is a little delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing speed, you can disable the “Automatically search for network folders and printers” option.

6. Disable Performance Counters

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.

* Download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List (http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/exctrlst-o.asp)
* Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom button below

7. Optimize Your Pagefile

You can optimize your pagefile. Setting a fixed size to your pagefile saves the operating system from the need to resize the pagefile.

* Right click on My Computer and select Properties
* Select the Advanced tab
* Under Performance choose the Settings button
* Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
* Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.

Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

8. Remove Fonts for Speed

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

* Open Control Panel
* Open Fonts folder
* Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

9. Use a Flash Memory to Boost Performance

To improve performance, you need to install additional RAM memory. It’ll let you boot your OS much quicker and run many applications and access data quicker. There is no easiest and more technically elegant way to do it than use eBoostr (http://www.eboostr.com).

eBoostr is a little program that lets you improve a performance of any computer, powered by Windows XP in much the same way as Vista’s ReadyBoost. With eBoostr, if you have a flash drive, such as a USB flash thumb drive or an SD card, you can use it to make your computer run better. Simply plug in a flash drive through a USB socket and Windows XP will use eBoostr to utilize the flash memory to improve performance.

The product shows the best results for frequently used applications and data, which becomes a great feature for people who are using office programs, graphics applications or developer tools. It’ll surely attract a special attention of laptop owners as laptop upgrade is usually more complicated and laptop hard drives are by definition slower than those of desktops.

10. Perform a Boot Defragment

There's a simple way to speed up XP startup: make your system do a boot defragment, which will put all the boot files next to one another on your hard disk. When boot files are in close proximity to one another, your system will start faster.

On most systems, boot defragment should be enabled by default, but it might not be on yours, or it might have been changed inadvertently. To make sure that boot defragment is enabled:

* Run the Registry Editor
* Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
* Set the Enable string value to Y if it is not already set to Y.
* Exit the Registry
* Reboot

Hope you find these 10 tips useful.
